This is my second painting in my "I'm gonna learn me some watercolors!" phase...despite the flowers being all pooty...I am really happy with how the whole thing came out. I'm not sure if this picture really shows it...there are little paint splatters on the skull...and if nothing else occurred during the process of making this piece...I realized how much FUN it is to spray paint all over with an old toothbrush. Yes, I am aware that I am a simple, simple person.

The reason it is called The Birthday Skull is because...back when I moved into my apartment...I decided that my refrigerator looked really bare and needed some art. So I broke out some computer paper and my HUGE box of Crayolas and drew myself a skull with some flowers. My friend Joanne loved it...and she said she needed one...so, since her birthday is coming up, and I didn't know what to get her...I thought I would make her skull...only not so crayoney.

As always...honest opinions are severely welcome.

Stuffs I used:
Paints: Various Portfolio tube watercolors.
Some Dr. Ph. Martin's liquid transparent watercolors.
A few Prismacolor watercolor pencils.
Brushes: Whatever I had lying around...including some crap I bought at Michael's for like a dollar and a half.
Paper: Strathome 140 lb. cold press.

I like how the splatters in the background almost look like little creepy faces, which kinda adds to the whole creepy skull thing. :P

It's kind of hard to judge how deep the eye sockets are. Maybe making them darker would help. Maybe it's just me being sleepy and incoherent though :P

No, I can see where that comes from. The only reason I stopped painting at that point is because I have a tendency to overdo things...and I figured if it's a little light, it might be forgivable for the dark colors in the background...but if I kept going...it would fuck it up.

Yeah I do that alot. Especially if I focus on tiny details for a long time, and then I look at it as a whole and then it's obvious I overdid it... Yeah it's better to just leave it than risk messing it up

I can see the splatters! The whole thing is really pretty and pleasing with its earthy splotches and colors in just the right place :)
